Treatment Duration:

  • Treatment duration varies depending on the treatment method. Creams are as needed followed by oral medication as prescribed. Laser therapy appointments typically take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes.

Pain Level:

  • Cold sore treatment aims to alleviate pain and discomfort associated with outbreaks. Many treatment options are minimally invasive, with laser therapy providing quick relief from pain and reducing healing time. For added comfort, we also offer sedation options to ensure a more relaxing experience during treatment. These methods help to manage symptoms effectively, promoting faster recovery and easing discomfort.

Process and Next Steps:

  • There will be an initial consultation in which we conduct an examination of the cold sore and review your medical history and any treatments you've previously tried to ensure we understand the underlying causes and severity of your condition.

  • We will then develop a treatment plan that may include topical creams, oral medications, and/or laser therapy. The treatment will be designed to relieve discomfort, promote faster healing, and minimize the duration of your cold sore outbreak.

  • After your initial treatment, we will schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure there’s progress and that the treatment is effective.

FAQs

What are cold sores?

  • Cold sores are small, fluid-filled blisters that typically appear around the mouth or on the lips. They are often triggered by factors such as stress, illness, sun exposure, or a weakened immune system.

Can I prevent cold sores?

  • Though they are not always preventable there are certain things you can do to reduce the risk of an outbreak such as: keeping your lips moisturized, practicing good hand hygiene, and avoiding stressors.

What causes cold sores?

  • Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), most commonly the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). The virus is very contagious and can be spread through close personal contact, such as kissing, or by sharing items like towels, razors, or utensils. Once infected, the virus can remain dormant in the body, typically in the nerve cells of the face, and reactivate later, causing cold sores to appear. They can be reactivated by triggers such as a weak immune system, stress, sun exposure, lack of sleep, and hormonal changes.
